Who can use the service?
This service is for national mobile Operators (hereinafter MNO) who wish to offer their end customers the possibility of sending and receiving calls and texts and using GPRS data traffic services on the open sea, while travelling on certain groups of vessels (ships and ferries), on which TIM has implemented its mobile radio coverage.
Description of the service
The service consists of enabling all the MNO's customers for roaming services on board ships, that is sending/receiving calls and text messages to/from any fixed or mobile telephony number using the mobile radio coverage that TIM has set up in collaboration with the following shipping companies: Costa Crociere, Ibero Cruceros and Grandi Navi Veloci.
MNO customers, once on board, are automatically registered. On the contrary, registration by all TIM land-based mobile network facilities is inhibited (except in cases of national terrestrial roaming agreements in force with the MNO).
Coverage on board the ships is achieved by an antenna connected by a VSAT type satellite backhaul link to a TIM mobile network exchange.
The service also uses an automatic system which, by comparing the ship's position, detected by the Global Positioning System (GPS) and that of the nearest port, makes it possible to comply with the EU regulations on supply of GSM/GPRS services in the territorial waters and to avoid interference with the various terrestrial mobile radio systems, including those of the other national MNOs.
All national MNOs are currently interconnected to the TIM mobile network and do not need the activation of any specific preparatory services, except for availability of interconnection for the functions required to supply roaming.
